Chapter 11

Nip this in the Bud

Thursday, September 15

When I entered the house, Louise sat in the living room in her recliner watching Law & Order SVU. I felt guilty for being late; we usually watched the show together. Then fear replaced my guilt.

Louise looked up as I entered the living room. One of the tuxedo cats, Minnie, was on her lap. “There you are. I was going to ask Eugeena and Amos to help me look for you.”

I sat down on the couch, still gripping my phone in my hand. I wasn’t sure why, but I felt violated.

The person who posted the comment probably meant nothing by it. Apparently, they were not a fan of Maggie’s, but they were slinging my name around like I was a suspect.

Louise sat up, and Oreo protested that she had the audacity to move. “Joss, what’s wrong? You look upset.”

Normally, I wouldn’t share things like this with my grandmother, but I was living in her house. I also really needed to know what to do. “Someone posted something on social media that got under my skin.”

I relayed what it said.

“What? Who in the world would do that? Who’s Rae Silva?” Louise’s face had turned red. “Call the police. They need to track this person down.”

I frowned. “Grandma, it doesn’t work like that.”

With surprising speed, Louise pushed the lever on the recliner down and sprung up with her hands on her hips like she was ready to fight. “Why not? They have to be a local person, right? I don’t understand why people just post anything they want. That person can’t get away with it.”

I stuttered, “Yeah, you’re right. But what good will the cops do?”

She shuffled over to me. “What about the detective on the case? Surely you should let him know someone is trying to smear your good name.”

I didn’t know if I could handle Detective Baez right now. Still, what else could I do? I slumped on the couch. “Okay, I’ll call him, but I doubt he can do anything.”

Louise nodded. “I will be right here. If he tries any funny stuff, I will sic Tiger on him.”

The image of the fat orange tabby cat attacking Detective Baez almost tickled my funny bone. Then I sobered because I wasn’t trying to have me and Louise locked up tonight. “Maybe you should keep Tiger in your bedroom for a bit.”

Detective Baez arrived quicker than I thought. Nosy neighbors would notice his dark sedan, but at least it was more discreet than a patrol car.

My heart did a little flip as I took in his strong jawline and those eyes that seemed to see right through me. I really hadn’t expected him to make a personal visit after I’d called and left a message about the Instagram comment. It seemed silly to do after I got off the phone.

“Are you going to introduce us?” Louise prompted.

“Um, yeah. Andre… I mean Detective Baez, this is my grandmother, Louise Hopkins.”

Detective Baez smiled at me and then turned to Louise.
